State or territory nomination is required, which means each state publishes its own 188 criteria. Civic leadership history is favourable; capital availability is decisive.
Pathway 4 — Family / Partner
If you have an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible NZ citizen partner, the Subclass 820/801 partner pathway avoids the occupation list entirely. Same for parent and other family streams. This is the most common route for retired or transitioning legislators settling in Australia with an Australian-citizen spouse, adult child, or parent.
Eligibility is determined by the relationship evidence, not by occupation.
