- Positive VETASSESS skills assessment
- Competent English (typically higher for arts-leadership roles)
- Under 45 at lodgement (limited exemptions for distinguished cultural appointments)
- At least three years post-qualification work experience
- Employer must be an approved Standard Business Sponsor
- Employer nomination citing ANZSCO 139911 with annual salary above the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold
Realistic 186 Direct Entry sponsors include the major state and federal cultural institutions — National Gallery of Australia, NGV, AGNSW, QAGOMA, AGSA, AGWA; Sydney Opera House, Australian Ballet, Opera Australia, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra; major festivals (Sydney Festival, Melbourne Festival, Adelaide Festival, Perth Festival, Brisbane Festival, Dark Mofo); and large independent companies and Major Performing Arts Group members.
Pathway 2 — Subclass 189 (points-tested PR)

Subclass 190 is direct PR with state nomination adding 5 points.
Pathway 4 — Subclass 491 (regional provisional → 191 PR)

Pathway 5 — Subclass 494 (employer-sponsored regional)
Subclass 494 is the regional cousin of 482 → employer-sponsored, regional postcode, converts to 191 after three years.

Distinguished Talent alternative — Subclass 858
For internationally recognised individual artists (rather than arts administrators), Subclass 858 (Global Talent / Distinguished Talent) is a separate direct-PR pathway. This visa requires:
- Internationally recognised exceptional and outstanding achievement in your field
- Nomination by an Australian individual or organisation of national reputation
- Distinct from skilled migration — different evidence and assessment pathway
ANZSCO 139911 is for the management role; Subclass 858 is for distinguished individual artists.
Costs at a glance
For a typical 186 Direct Entry pathway with a family of three:
- VETASSESS skills assessment: AUD 1,096 per the VETASSESS fees page
- 186 visa fee (primary): AUD 4,910
- Health, police, English: AUD 1,050
- Employer SAF levy: AUD 5,000 one-off (large business) or AUD 3,000 (small business — many arts organisations qualify for the small-business rate)

Common mistakes
- Confusing the management role with individual artist visas. ANZSCO 139911 is for arts administrators / managers. For individual artists, Subclass 858 Distinguished Talent or Subclass 408 Temporary Activity may be more appropriate.
- Lacking a management track record. Practising artists with limited management experience may not meet the 139911 bar — VETASSESS expects management decisions, not artistic output.
- Not Choosing the right code. Curators (224412 / 224999) and Visual Artists / Performers (211xxx-212xxx) have different codes and assessors.
