Things that frequently surprise people
Australian Special Class E&I market is structurally short. Woodside, Chevron, Inpex, Shell QGC, Santos, Origin — all sponsor Special Class E&I technicians continuously. The talent pool is small and primarily drawn from UK / Middle East / South Africa.
IECEx CoPC opens the door. Australian sponsors filter heavily on IECEx CoPC 005 / 006 / 007 / 009. The CompEx Ex01-04 / Ex05-12 are direct UK-origin equivalents and Australia recognises both.
SIS / SIL competency commands premium. TÜV FSEng certification + demonstrated SIL 2 / 3 SIF testing experience makes you immediately attractive for DCS / SIS migration projects (Yokogawa CENTUM CS3000 → CENTUM VP, Honeywell TDC3000 → Experion).
FPSO offshore work pays the most. Woodside Ngujima-Yin (Greater Enfield), BHP Pyrenees, Santos Crux FPU — FPSO POB rotations (typically 28-on-28-off) pay AUD 250-350k for senior Special Class with OPITO BOSIET / HUET training.
Hydrogen / ammonia projects are starting. Fortescue Future Industries (FFI Pilbara), CWP Asian Renewable Energy Hub, Hydrogen Park SA — first-of-a-kind plants need experienced commissioning E&I technicians. Premium pay during commissioning phase.
Custody-transfer / fiscal metering specialism pays well. LACT / fiscal metering specialists for LNG / oil export terminals are a small niche — uncertainty calculation per AGA / API / ISO 5167 expertise commands premium rates.
Health examinations expire after 12 months. If your visa takes longer than 12 months to grant, expect to redo them.
Tax residency starts on arrival. The Australian tax year runs 1 July to 30 June. See ATO residency rules before signing.
MARA registration is mandatory for paid migration assistance. Verify any agent at the MARA register.
