5. Payslips / tax records.
6. Photographic portfolio — 15-20 examples of completed turning (spindles / newels / balusters, table legs, bowls, restoration replicas).
7. Equipment operator records — lathe types (Wadkin, Vicmarc, Powermatic, ONEWAY, AAW Stubby, Robust), copy lathe (Centauro, Wadkin, Bursgreen), CNC lathe.
8. Tool / sharpening records — Sorby / Henry Taylor / Crown / Ashley Iles turning tools.
9. Industry memberships — American Association of Woodturners (AAW), Australian Woodworkers Association.
10. WHS / OHS — dust extraction, eye protection, machinery safety.
11. English test — Vocational English minimum for OSAP.

Employment evidence — what TRA wants

3 years post-qualification trade employment. Reference letters must specify by turning type / technique:

• Spindle turning — "Turned staircase newels / balusters / spindles for staircase manufacturer; volume production turning on copy lathe (Centauro / Wadkin / Bursgreen); standardised profiles to design specifications; verified dimensional accuracy (±0.5mm)."
• Table / chair / bed leg turning — "Turned dining table legs, chair legs, four-poster bed posts; matched to existing pieces for restoration; managed grain orientation; produced consistent matched sets."
• Faceplate / bowl turning — "Turned bowls, platters, hollow forms using bowl gouges, scrapers, hollowing tools; managed grain orientation, end-grain vs face-grain, wall thickness consistency."
• Restoration replication — "Replicated damaged / missing antique furniture parts; matched timber species (oak, mahogany, walnut, cherry) to original; matched profiles using callipers / profile gauges; period-correct turning techniques."
• Production turning — "Operated copy lathe / CNC lathe for high-volume production; managed tool wear monitoring; achieved [X parts per shift]; verified quality at fixed intervals."
• Specialty turning — "Pen / bottle stopper / kitchen tool turning on pen mandrel; segmented bowl turning with multiple species; burl handling; gilded / coloured / textured surface finishing."
• Tool sharpening — "Sharpened gouges, skew chisels, parting tools, bowl gouges, scrapers using bench grinder + jigs; managed flute / bevel geometry for clean cuts."
• Timber selection — "Selected and dried turning blanks; managed cracking risk (end-sealing, controlled drying); identified figured / curly / burl stock; specialty timber knowledge (Tasmanian Oak, Huon Pine, Blackwood for restoration / artisan applications)."

Generic "did wood turning" wording does not pass TRA review. Detail by turning type, equipment, productivity, restoration techniques.

OSAP — what to expect

Phase 1 (technical interview): turning theory (spindle vs faceplate), tool selection and sharpening, timber selection, lathe operation, copy lathe / CNC operation, restoration techniques, safety (dust extraction, eye protection, work-holding).

Phase 2 (practical at RTO test centre): turn a spindle or bowl from supplied stock; demonstrate tool use, sharpening, quality.

• Worshipful Company of Turners (UK) — Liveryman / Freeman records.
• Drechsler Apprenticeship (Germany) — journeyman / master records.
• American Association of Woodturners (AAW) membership.
• Australian Woodworkers Association membership.

English requirements

TRA OSAP: Vocational English minimum (IELTS 5.0 overall).

Home Affairs 494: Competent English (IELTS 6.0 each band).

Common pitfalls

• Trying VETASSESS. TRA is the pathway.
• Hobby-only background. Wood turning has a large hobbyist community. TRA requires documented commercial / professional employment, not hobby work.
• Pure cabinetmaker / furniture maker background with occasional turning. Consider 394111 / 394113 instead (broader visa stack).
• No portfolio. Photographic portfolio essentially required.
• Sole-trader / family-business letters only. TRA scrutinises related-party employer letters.
