Reference letters must show at least 65% time on school-lab-technician work:

• Prac preparation — preparing materials, setups, solutions and worksheets for biology / chemistry / physics / psychology / earth science / agriculture lessons.
• Solution preparation — making molar / mass-volume / serial-dilution standards for prac classes.
• Equipment readiness — microscopes, hotplates, Bunsen burners, gas taps, water baths, centrifuges, balances, electrophoresis tanks, oscilloscopes, multimeters.
• Specimen preparation — dissection sets (frog, fish, sheep eye, kidney etc. per state ethics guidelines), microscope slides, plant material.
• Lab cleanup and waste disposal — chemical waste segregation, sharps disposal, biological waste handling.
• Chemical storage — Australian Poisons Standard (SUSMP) compliance, Schedule 2 / 4 / 6 / 7 / 8 controls, separation of incompatibles, locked storage of dangerous goods.
• Risk assessments — Australia uses RiskAssess and similar platforms for school chemistry; risk assessments must be in place before prac begins.
• Stocktake — quarterly / annual chemical stocktake, expiry management, MSDS / SDS register maintenance.
• Equipment maintenance — calibration, minor repair, vendor liaison.
• Demonstration support during class — under teacher supervision.
• Year 12 / IB / VCE / HSC / QCE / WACE / SACE practical exam preparation.

Common pitfalls

• Teaching-role applicants. If your dominant duty is classroom teaching, 241411 Secondary School Teacher is the right code (AITSL pathway).
• Industrial lab experience without school context. Pure commercial / research lab work without school experience may better fit 311411 / 311413.
• Diploma-only candidates. AQF 5 / 6 alone may be borderline — substantial post-qualification experience helps.
