Two main pathways
Pathway 1 — Competent Authority Pathway (CAP)
- Primary medical degree from approved UK / Ireland / NZ / USA / Canada school
- Internship completed in approved system
- Origin registration with no restrictions
- AMC verifies → Medical Board grants Provisional Registration
- 12 months supervised practice (intern-level position) → General Registration
Pathway 2 — Standard Pathway
- Primary medical degree from non-approved country
- AMC MCQ Examination — online (~AUD 3,000)
- AMC Clinical Examination — held in Australia (~AUD 6,000-8,000)
- After both pass: Provisional → 12 months supervised → General Registration
Qualification evidence
Submit:
- Primary medical degree (MBBS / MD / equivalent) certificate + transcript
- Internship completion documents
- Origin-side professional registration (GMC, MCI, MCNZ, NPI, etc.)
- Continuing professional development records (5+ years recent)
Clinical experience evidence
Each role:
- Hospital employer letter
- Title — RMO / SHO / Senior House Officer / Career Medical Officer / Junior Doctor
- Dates and FTE hours
- Rotations (medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics, A&E, etc.)
- Performance reviews
- Logbook (where available)
English requirement
AMC + Medical Board requires:
- OET — grade B each component (most popular)
- IELTS Academic — 7.0 each band
- PTE Academic — 65 each
Provisional vs General Registration
- Provisional Registration — restricts practice to specified supervised positions; allows internship-level or junior RMO work
- General Registration — full unsupervised registration; allows senior RMO + specialty training entry
12 months supervised practice in Australia required to convert Provisional → General.
Common reasons assessments stall
- English test too old. Test must be valid (typically 2 years for OET)
- Origin-side registration restrictions. GMC / MCI / MCNZ no-restrictions registration essential
- Insufficient internship documentation. Internship logbook + rotations required
- Standard Pathway exam underdone. Both MCQ + Clinical exams need preparation
