• Treatment supervision — methyl bromide fumigation, sulfuryl fluoride fumigation, heat treatment, irradiation, cold treatment, ethylene oxide.
• Live animal / plant import facility inspection — quarantine approved premises (QAP), post-entry plant quarantine, post-entry animal quarantine.
• Regional surveillance — fruit fly trapping, varroa mite surveillance, fire ant / electric ant programs, Khapra beetle surveillance, foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) readiness, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) preparedness.
• Detection — pest / disease identification, voucher specimen preservation, diagnostic lab interface.
• Emergency biosecurity response — incursion response, eradication / containment programs.
• Compliance and enforcement — infringement notices, prosecution support, court evidence.
• Approved Arrangement audits — auditing third-party treatment / handling providers.

Useful certifications

• Cert IV in Government Investigations — widely recognised for regulatory work.
• DAFF Authorised Officer training — typically post-arrival.
• Pesticide handling licence — state-level (e.g. NSW SafeWork pesticide chemical accreditation).
• Fumigation supervisor certification — for treatment-supervision roles.
• Aviation security / port security clearance awareness.

English

VETASSESS doesn't directly require English. Home Affairs requires Competent English; regulatory roles dealing with statements / court evidence generally need Proficient or higher.

Common pitfalls

• Pure scientist / research roles. If your work is laboratory diagnostic / pathology of pests and diseases, 234518 / 234517 / 234999 may fit better.
• Customs officer roles abroad. Customs work without biosecurity content doesn't satisfy 311313.
• Domestic plant nursery / on-farm hygiene only. Reference letters must show formal inspection / regulatory / treatment work.
