11. First-aid + plant emergency response certifications.
12. WHS / OHS training — confined space, hot work, working at heights, electrical.
13. English test — Vocational English minimum for OSAP.

3 years post-qualification trade employment. Reference letters must specify by generation type:

• Coal-fired thermal plant operation — "Operated [boiler / turbine / generator] at [station name] — subcritical / supercritical / ultra-supercritical PF firing; managed boiler water chemistry; achieved capacity factor [X%]; coordinated unit start-up / shutdown / load following."
• Gas turbine plant — "Operated GE 9F / Siemens SGT-800 / Mitsubishi M501G combined / open cycle gas turbine; managed fuel system, combustion control, NOx emissions; conducted hot starts, warm starts, cold starts."
• Hydroelectric — "Operated Francis / Pelton / Kaplan turbines; managed water flow / head pressure; coordinated with grid dispatch on generation scheduling; HV switchyard switching."
• Pumped hydro storage — "Operated reversible pump-turbines; managed cycling between generation and pumping modes; grid frequency response."
• DCS / SCADA operation — "Operated ABB Symphony / Emerson Ovation / Honeywell Experion / GE Mark VI/VIe control system; monitored alarms; trended variables; coordinated with field operators."
• HV switching — "Conducted HV switching to [11kV / 22kV / 33kV / 66kV / 132kV / 220kV / 275kV / 330kV / 500kV] — authorised switcher; managed transformer / circuit breaker / disconnector operations; complied with switching schedule / lock-out procedures."

• Renewables (wind / solar / battery) — "Operated [wind farm / solar farm / battery storage]; monitored individual generator / inverter / battery cell performance; coordinated with grid for renewable energy export / curtailment."
• Plant emergency response — "Responded to plant emergencies (boiler trip, turbine trip, generator out-of-step, fire); managed unit safe shutdown; coordinated with maintenance for return-to-service."

Generic "operated power plant" wording does not pass TRA review. Detail by generation type, capacity, control systems.

OSAP — what to expect

Phase 1 (technical interview): power generation theory (thermodynamics, electrical generation, grid synchronisation), DCS / SCADA operation, HV switching, emergency response, AS standards.

Phase 2 (practical at RTO): demonstrate plant operation competency.

Vendor / industry certifications

• ABB Symphony / Emerson Ovation / Honeywell Experion / GE Mark VI operator training.
• NERC system operator (US) — transferable.
• Power Engineer certification (Canadian Alberta / BC) — transferable.
• HV Switching Authorisation (UK / EU equivalents).
• AS NEM standards (Australian National Electricity Market) — for post-arrival familiarity.

English requirements

TRA OSAP: Vocational English minimum.

Home Affairs visas: Competent English (IELTS 6.0 each band).

Common pitfalls

• Trying VETASSESS — TRA is the pathway.
• Chemical plant / gas operator background — consider 399211 / 399212 instead.
• Electrical engineer background — 233311 Electrical Engineer (different).
• No HV switching authorisation — Australian plants require state-specific re-certification anyway, but evidence of overseas HV switching authority strengthens TRA submission.
