- Certified copy of trade certificate(s) — Cert III in Painting and Decorating or international equivalent.
- Trade training transcripts.
- Detailed CV mapped to ANZSCO 332211 — projects, residential / commercial / industrial mix.
- Employment reference letters on letterhead with role, dates, hours/week, salary, painting duties.
- Identity — passport bio page.
- Payslips / tax records.
- Photos of work (sanitised) — particularly for heritage / specialty / large-commercial work.
- WHS / White Card (post-arrival).
ANZSCO 332211 task focus
Reference letters must show at least 65% time on painting and decorating work:
- Surface preparation — sanding, scraping, filling, priming, masking.
- Residential interior painting — walls, ceilings, trim, doors, windows.
- Residential exterior painting — weatherboard, brick / render, fascia, eaves, roof.
- Commercial fit-out painting — office, retail, hospitality.
- Industrial protective coatings — epoxy, polyurethane, zinc-rich primers, intumescent fire-protection coatings (Promat, Nullifire, AkzoNobel Interlock, International Paint).
- Heritage restoration paintwork — including lead-paint awareness and management (lead-paint detection, encapsulation, removal under controls per Safe Work Australia).
- Wallpaper hanging — including specialty / textile / digital-print wallpapers.
- Decorative finishes — faux finishes, marbling, graining, gilding.
- Spray painting (architectural) — HVLP, airless spray for walls / ceilings / cabinetry.
- Texture coatings — Granosite, Dulux Texture range, Berger Lite.
- Reading specifications and colour schedules.
Useful certifications
- Certificate III in Painting and Decorating (CPC30620) — Australian Cert III.
- White Card (CPCCWHS1001) — mandatory.
- State licensing — QBCC painter licence for QLD work over threshold; builder licence in other states if running own business.
- Lead-paint awareness — Safe Work Australia training.
- Working at Heights — for scaffold / roof / ladder work.
- Spray painting certificate — for architectural spray work.
English
TRA OSA doesn't directly require English. Home Affairs requires Competent English.
Common pitfalls
- Vehicle painter mislabelled. Motor vehicle painting fits 332212 Vehicle Painter, not 332211.
- Industrial spray painter. Pure industrial spray painting may fit 399211 Industrial Spraypainter.
