Skills assessment process

AOPA process:

1. Submit application
2. Pay fee (~AUD 1,500-3,000)
3. Submit qualification + clinical evidence
4. Sit English test (if not exempt)
5. Receive outcome

Qualification evidence

Submit:

• Bachelor or Master in Prosthetics and Orthotics certificate + transcript
• Course outline showing both orthotics and prosthetics, lower and upper limb, paediatric, spinal coverage
• Clinical placement records (typically 1500+ hours)
• Origin-side registration (BAPO HCPC UK, ABC US, NZBPO, ISPO Cat I)
• Continuing professional development records (5+ years recent)

Clinical experience evidence

Each role:

• Hospital / private practice employer letter
• Title — Orthotist / Prosthetist / Senior O&P / Lead O&P / Specialist
• Dates and FTE hours
• Caseload (orthotic types, prosthetic levels, paediatric, spinal, sport)
• Devices delivered (anonymised case mix)
• Specialist procedures (myoelectric prosthetics, paediatric scoliosis bracing, etc.)
• CAD/CAM / 3D-printing experience

For private practice owners:

• Business registration
• Practice insurance documentation

English requirement

AOPA requires:

• OET — grade B each component (most popular)
• IELTS Academic — 7.0 each band
• PTE Academic — 65 each
• TOEFL iBT — refer to current cutoffs

ACP credential post-assessment

After successful assessment + visa grant:

1. Apply for AOPA membership + ACP status
2. Pay membership fee (~AUD 600-1,000 annual)
3. Maintain CPD requirements (60 points / 3 years typical)

ACP status is required by NDIS, hospitals, and most O&P providers in Australia.

Common reasons assessments fail

• Single-discipline evidence. Pure orthotics-only or prosthetics-only profile typically needs supplementing
• Insufficient clinical hours. 1500+ supervised clinical hours typical
• Origin-side registration absent. BAPO HCPC / ABC / NZBPO / ISPO essential
• English test too old. Test must be valid
