Why there is no 272211 skills assessment
Migration skills assessments exist for points-tested skilled visas (189 / 190 / 491). Minister of Religion is not on skilled occupation lists. Religious worker migration uses dedicated sponsor-led visa streams (407 / 408 / 482 / 186 ENS Religious Worker stream) where:
- The sponsoring religious institution recognises your ordination / theological qualification.
- Home Affairs assesses the sponsor's genuineness, the position's authenticity, and remuneration / work-condition compliance.
- There is no separate body (like ACS, VETASSESS, AHPRA) issuing a "Minister of Religion" skills assessment.
What the sponsor evaluates
In place of a skills assessment, the sponsoring religious institution evaluates:
- Ordination / theological qualification — recognised by your home denomination and accepted by the Australian denomination.
- Religious vocation — full-time religious work commitment.
- Position fit — matches a real, remunerated position within the institution.
- References — from your home denomination's leadership.
Documents (sponsor-stage)
For the sponsor's files (not direct migration submission):
- Ordination certificate — from your denomination.
- Theological qualifications — bachelor / master in theology / divinity / Islamic studies / similar.
- Letters of recommendation — from your home denomination's senior leadership.
- Curriculum vitae / ministry record — chronological ministry positions.
- Identity — passport bio page.
Documents (visa-stage)
For the visa application:
- Sponsor's nomination letter detailing the position.
- Sponsor's approval as Standard Business Sponsor / Religious Worker sponsor.
- Personal documents — passport, photos, character / health checks.
- English evidence — IELTS / OET / PTE Functional English (4.5+ each).
- Health insurance — for non-PR visa streams.
English
Religious worker visas require Functional English — substantially lower than skilled visa thresholds:
- IELTS Academic / General Training: 4.5+ in each band.
- Or evidence of substantial English-medium education / work.
Some religious worker visa streams permit lower English where the sponsor demonstrates the role is conducted in a non-English language (e.g., Arabic-speaking imam, Mandarin-speaking pastor, etc.).
Common pitfalls
- Treating it as skilled migration. Many migrants attempt 189 / 190 visas under 272211 and are refused — there's no skilled visa for this code.
- Sponsor-only sponsorship. Religious institutions need to be approved sponsors before they can sponsor.
- Volunteer-only roles don't qualify. Sponsor-led religious worker visas require remunerated religious work, not pure volunteer service.
