- Automated analyser operation — chemistry, haematology, coagulation, immunology, urine.
- Microbiology — culture plating, Gram staining, basic bacterial / fungal identification, antibiotic susceptibility setup, MALDI-TOF.
- Blood bank — group and screen, antibody screen, crossmatch (under MLS supervision), Rh / ABO grouping, DAT.

- Equipment maintenance and calibration.
Useful certifications
- AIMS membership (Affiliate / Associate / Member) — most common professional credential.
- NATA / ISO 15189 awareness — most Australian labs are NATA-accredited; familiarity with ISO 15189 quality system is essential.
- RCPAQAP participation — Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Quality Assurance Programs.
- Phlebotomy certification if you also collect.
- Laboratory information system experience — Auslab, Cerner Millennium PathNet, Epic Beaker, MEDITECH, AusCare LIS.

English
VETASSESS doesn't directly require English. Home Affairs requires Competent English; for points-tested visas target Proficient or Superior.
Common pitfalls
- MLS vs MLT confusion. If you have a 4-year Bachelor / Master and run interpretive analytical work, 234611 Medical Laboratory Scientist may fit better.
- Pure phlebotomy / collector roles. Specimen collection without processing experience fits 311216, not 311213.
- Generic "research lab" experience. Reference letters must demonstrate medical / pathology lab work specifically, not broader research-lab background.
