7. OPITO modular safety training — Permit to Work, BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training), HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape), FOET (Further Offshore Emergency Training) — for offshore gas operations.
8. Process safety training — OSHA PSM, AIChE CCPS, ICHEME safety.
9. API certifications — API 510 (pressure vessel), API 570 (piping), API 653 (storage tank).
10. Confined-space entry, hot-work, working-at-heights tickets.
11. Hazmat / DG handling training.
12. WHS / OHS — extensive offshore / onshore safety training.
13. English test — Vocational English minimum for OSAP.

Employment evidence — what TRA wants

3 years post-qualification trade employment. Reference letters must specify by facility / process:

• LNG operations — "Operated LNG train at [facility name] processing [X tonnes per annum] gas; managed mixed refrigerant / propane-precooled / cascade liquefaction; monitored cryogenic temperatures (-162°C LNG storage); supported ship loading operations; complied with API LNG safety standards."
• Refinery operations — "Operated [CDU / vacuum unit / hydrocracker / FCC / alkylation] at [refinery]; managed process variables; achieved product specifications (octane, sulphur, cetane, flash point); supported refinery turnarounds."
• Gas processing — "Operated gas processing plant at [Bass Strait / Cooper Basin / Surat Basin / equivalent]; gas treating (amine sweetening, glycol dehydration, mercury removal); compression; pipeline injection / sales gas spec."
• Upstream / platform operations — "Operated offshore platform [name]; gas / oil separation; water treatment; gas lift / artificial lift management; pipeline export; complied with offshore safety regulations."
• DCS / PLC operation — "Operated Honeywell Experion DCS / Yokogawa Centum / Emerson DeltaV / Siemens PCS 7; monitored alarms; trended variables; coordinated with field operators on routine operations and upsets."
• Gas treating processes — "Operated amine plant (MEA, DEA, MDEA); managed amine concentration, lean / rich loading, reboiler duty; sulfur recovery (Claus / sub-dewpoint process); managed sour gas / acid gas safety."
• Process safety / emergency response — "Responded to plant emergencies (gas release, fire, equipment failure); managed Emergency Shutdown (ESD) activations; coordinated with offsite emergency response; managed personnel mustering."
• Permit to Work / Hot Work — "Issued / received Permit to Work for confined-space entry, hot work, line break, work at heights; ensured isolation per LOTO / lockout-tagout procedures."
• Maintenance support — "Coordinated with maintenance for routine and turnaround maintenance; managed equipment isolation; supported brownfield modifications."
• Pipeline operations — "Operated gas transmission pipeline; managed compressor stations; SCADA monitoring; managed line pack, throughput, leakage detection."

Generic "gas / petroleum operator" wording does not pass TRA review. Detail by facility type, processes, control systems, safety credentials.

OSAP — what to expect

Phase 1 (technical interview, 1-2 hours via video): hydrocarbon / gas processing theory (LNG liquefaction, gas treating, distillation), DCS / PLC operation, process safety (PSM, AS 2885 pipeline, offshore safety), specific facility operations (depending on background).

Phase 2 (practical at RTO test centre, 1-2 days): demonstrate process plant competency — DCS operation, P&ID reading, hazard identification, emergency response.

Vendor / industry certifications

Strongly recommended:

• OPITO modular training (BOSIET, HUET, FOET, MIST) — offshore safety.
• API 510 / 570 / 653 — pressure equipment.
• OSHA PSM training.
• Honeywell Experion / Yokogawa Centum / Emerson DeltaV / Siemens PCS 7 operator certificate.
• AS 2885 pipeline standards training.
• NORSOK standards (Norwegian — transferable).

English requirements

TRA OSAP: Vocational English minimum (IELTS 5.0 overall).

Home Affairs 186 / 482: Competent English (IELTS 6.0 each band).

Common pitfalls

• Trying VETASSESS. TRA is the pathway.
• Chemical plant operator background only. May fit 399211 Chemical Plant Operator better. Distinguish by primary facility type — LNG / gas / refinery → 399212; chemical / pharma / mineral processing → 399211.
• Petroleum engineer background. Different code — 233612 Petroleum Engineer (Engineers Australia VETASSESS pathway).
• Driller / rigger background. Different codes — 712111 Driller, 712114 Mining Plant Operator.
• No OPITO offshore safety credentials. For LNG / offshore gas operations, OPITO certifications are essentially required by Australian sponsors.
