The evidence pack
Reference letters
Each employer reference letter should be:

- Signed by a senior person (Owner / Regional Manager / GM / HR Director) with their position
- Dated within 3 months of lodgement
- Specific about your dates of employment (DD/MM/YYYY format)
- Specific about your title — Branch Manager / Hire Manager / Operations Manager
- Specific about scope (asset count / value, FTE, annual hire revenue)
- Specific about hours per week (full-time)
- Detailed about the duties — mapped to the ANZSCO task profile
Duties to evidence
Map your reference letters to all of these where they apply:
- Operations management — counter / online sales, asset utilisation, delivery / collection
- Asset management — capex planning, maintenance scheduling, replacement, asset disposal
- Financial management — annual budget ownership, hire revenue, asset utilisation rate, payback periods
- Workforce management — counter staff, drivers, workshop / mechanics, sales reps
- Compliance — Safe Work Australia WHS, Australian Consumer Law (hire contracts), Heavy Vehicle / dangerous goods (where applicable)

Common rejection patterns
"Counter staff / supervisor, not manager"
Single-shift counter supervisor work without P&L / staff hiring authority may be assessed at a lower skill level.
"Title without substance"
Generic descriptions of "running the hire business" without specific asset value, FTE, revenue, or financial figures get downgraded.
"Less than 20 hours per week effective"
Part-time or fractional roles may be discounted.
The five-year window
VETASSESS counts post-qualification employment at the required skill level within the last five years from the date of application.
