Single primary pathway
Unlike most occupations where VETASSESS is the migration assessor, AHPRA / PsyBA is BOTH the migration skills assessment body AND the practice registration body for Psychologists.

Two AHPRA pathways
Pathway 1: APAC-accredited (or recognised equivalent) program
If you trained in an APAC-accredited program or one of these recognised equivalents:
- United Kingdom — BPS-accredited PsyD / DClinPsy / DClinPsych.
- United States — APA-accredited PhD / PsyD in Clinical Psychology.
- New Zealand — NZ Psychologists Board-accredited DClinPsy.
- Canada — CPA-accredited PhD / PsyD.
- Ireland — PSI-accredited DClinPsy.
→ Direct AHPRA registration assessment. Standard 12-16 weeks.
Pathway 2: Non-accredited program
If your training is not in an accredited program:
- AHPRA conducts a substantial equivalence assessment.
- May require: bridging coursework, additional supervised practice, national psychology examination, provisional registration period.
- Total post-arrival timeline: 12-36 months to general registration.

- Certified copy of degree certificate(s) — bachelor + Master / Doctorate.
- Academic transcripts.
- Detailed CV chronological.
- Supervised practice records — supervised hours, supervisor names, scope of practice.
- Home jurisdiction registration certificate (e.g., UK HCPC registration, US state Psychology Board licence, NZ Psychologists Board registration).
- Professional Indemnity Insurance evidence.
- Identity — passport bio page.
- English evidence — IELTS 7.0+ each (PsyBA requirement).
- Reference letters from supervisors / current employer.
PsyBA Clinical Psychology endorsement
Beyond General Psychologist registration, Clinical Psychology endorsement unlocks higher Medicare rebates and is preferred by hospitals / mental health services. Pathway:
- Master of Clinical Psychology (or equivalent — DClinPsy, PsyD).
- Registrar Program — 2 years (full-time equivalent) supervised practice with PsyBA-approved Clinical supervisor.
- Outcomes documentation to PsyBA.
UK / US / Canadian / NZ Clinical Psychology graduates often achieve direct Clinical endorsement based on equivalent training + supervised practice. Plan post-arrival registrar program timing.
English
PsyBA requires Proficient English — IELTS Academic 7.0+ in each band (or equivalent OET / PTE). For visa points, Superior English (IELTS 8.0+ each) gives 20 points.
UK / US / Canadian / NZ / Irish trained applicants may be exempted from English testing if their training was English-medium throughout.
ANZSCO 272311 task focus
AHPRA / PsyBA expects evidence of clinical psychology work:
- Mental health assessment and diagnosis (DSM-5-TR / ICD-11).
- Evidence-based psychological intervention (CBT, ACT, DBT, EMDR, Schema Therapy, IPT, MBSR).
- Inpatient / outpatient mental health services.
- Hospital liaison psychiatry, consult-liaison work.
- Complex case formulation and treatment planning.
- Supervision of provisional psychologists / interns.

- APS College of Clinical Psychologists membership — career-long professional development.
- Modality-specific training — EMDR, DBT, Schema Therapy, ACT, MBSR, MBCT.
- AAPi (Australian Association of Psychologists Inc) membership.
- Medicare provider number post-PsyBA Clinical endorsement.
Common pitfalls
- English requirement is higher than visa Competent. PsyBA requires Proficient English (7.0 each) — much higher than visa Competent.
- Non-accredited training. Some country programs aren't recognised — plan post-arrival bridging.
- PI insurance. Required for AHPRA registration and practice — arrange before commencing work.
