This is the 2026 TRA skills assessment guide for ANZSCO 342311 — Business Machine Mechanic. For visa pathway selection see the 342311 pathway guide; for cost/timeline see the case study.

TRA pathways
| Pathway | Where applied | Turnaround | Cost (AUD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offshore Skills Assessment (OSA) | From outside Australia | ~12 weeks | ~1,000 - 1,500 |
| Job Ready Program (JRP) | Onshore (after 485 or 482) | 12-18 months | ~1,500 + workplace stages |
| Migration Skills Assessment (Trade) | Some sponsor pathways | ~8-12 weeks | ~1,200 |
OSA is the default route for offshore applicants. JRP is the path for 485 / 482 holders.
Benchmark qualification
The Australian benchmark is Cert III in Electronics and Communications (UEE30811) or equivalent business-machine-servicing trade qualification. Core competencies:
- Electronics fundamentals — analogue and digital circuits, power supplies, motor drives, sensors.
- Mechanical fundamentals — paper-path mechanics, sensors, gears, belts, solenoids.
- Image-formation systems — laser / LED / inkjet print, electrophotography (charging, exposure, development, transfer, fusing, cleaning).
- Network / interface — Ethernet, USB, Wi-Fi, SNMP, IPP, AirPrint, Mopria.
- Test instruments — multimeter, oscilloscope, ESD-safe servicing tools.
- AS / NZS 3000 LV electrical-interface knowledge (mains plug / fuse-in-plug).
- Customer-facing service-call procedures, parts inventory, service-report writing.
Documents
- Trade qualification certificate(s) with academic transcripts — certified copies.
- Detailed CV mapped to ANZSCO 342311 — equipment serviced (MFPs / ATMs / EFTPOS / kiosks), volume (service calls / month), regions covered.
- Employment reference letters on letterhead — role, dates, hours/week, salary, service technician duties.
- Identity — passport bio page.
- Payslips / tax records.
- Manufacturer training certificates — Konica Minolta CSE / CTE / DCAS, Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE engineer certification, Ricoh GAP / RGAP, Xerox CSE, Fuji Apeos engineer certification, NCR FSE, Diebold Nixdorf BSE, Verifone / Ingenico merchant-services certification.
- Service-call logs — examples of service tickets closed (anonymised) showing fault diagnosis, parts replaced, time on site.
- WHS / safety records — ESD safe work practice, manual handling, working in retail / banking secure environments.
- Photo evidence — service-bench setup, MFP / ATM internal work (where permitted).
- Security clearance documents (where applicable) — for ATM cash-handling, EFTPOS PCI-DSS work.

ANZSCO 342311 task focus
Reference letters and JRP workplace evidence must show at least 65% time on 342311 duties:
- MFP / photocopier service — fuser / drum / developer / transfer-belt replacement, scanner glass / ADF roller service, paper-path fault diagnosis, image-quality troubleshooting (banding, ghosting, registration error, colour calibration).
- Production print service — colour management (X-Rite calibration), inline finishing module service (saddle stitch, perfect bind, GBC punch), Fiery / EFI controller service.
- ATM service — cash-cassette load, deposit module reset, card reader (DIP / motorised), receipt-printer paper / cutter, EPP (Encrypted PIN Pad) replacement under dual control.
- EFTPOS / POS terminal — battery replacement, screen / keypad replacement, PCI-PED tamper recovery, comms reset (Wi-Fi / 4G / Ethernet), terminal swap-out.
- Retail self-checkout — scale calibration (Class III legal-for-trade), barcode scanner alignment, cash recycler unjam.
- Kiosk / ticket machine — receipt printer / thermal head replacement, coin / note acceptor service, touchscreen replacement.
- Postage meter / mailroom — feeder, sealer, scale, indicia printer service.
- Network configuration — IP setup, SMB / SNMP scanning, follow-me printing (PaperCut, EveryonePrint, uniFLOW), AirPrint / Mopria setup.
- Service-call workflow — dispatch system (ServicePower, Salesforce Field Service, ServiceNow FSM), parts requisition, SLA management.
- Preventive maintenance — service kits, page-count thresholds, end-of-life (EOL) device replacement.
- PCI DSS / PCI-PIN security — for EFTPOS / ATM PIN-pad replacement requires PCI-compliant procedures.
Useful certifications
- Manufacturer engineer certifications — Konica Minolta, Canon, Ricoh, Fuji Apeos, Xerox, Kyocera, Toshiba, Sharp, HP, Lexmark.
- NCR / Diebold Nixdorf ATM service certification.
- Verifone, Ingenico, PAX EFTPOS engineer certification.
- Pitney Bowes mailing systems certification.
- PCI PIN-Pad / PCI DSS training.
- A+ CompTIA (CompTIA A+) — desktop hardware fundamentals.
- Working at Heights — for branch / retail-ceiling-mounted CCTV / kiosk installs.
- ESD-Safe Workstation competency.

English
TRA doesn't directly require English. Home Affairs requires Competent English; for points-tested visas target Proficient (10 pts) or Superior (20 pts).
Common pitfalls
- Generic IT support pretending to business-machine-mechanic. If 70%+ of your work is PC build / OS install / desktop support, you should look at 313112 ICT Customer Support Officer (ACS pathway, not TRA).
- Pure helpdesk profile. Phone / remote-only support without hands-on hardware service is 313112, not 342311.
- Vendor / manufacturer training in lieu of trade qualification. Many overseas technicians have only manufacturer training and no trade qualification — TRA will require evidence of a recognised trade qualification or at least an extensive demonstrated employment history.
- Niche equipment focus. Pure cash-counting machine service (CashScan, Glory, Toshiba) may need to be supplemented with broader business-machine work to satisfy the 65% rule.
