Reference letters
Each employer reference letter should be:
- On official letterhead of the boarding facility / chain
- Signed by a senior person (Owner / Director / GM / HR Director) with their position
- Dated within 3 months of lodgement
- Specific about your dates of employment (DD/MM/YYYY format)
- Specific about your title — Kennel Manager / Cattery Operator / Pet Hotel GM
- Specific about scope (animal capacity, FTE, annual revenue)
- Specific about hours per week (full-time)
- Detailed about the duties — mapped to the ANZSCO task profile
Duties to evidence
Map your reference letters to all of these where they apply:
- Operations management — bookings, intake, animal care, departure
- Animal welfare — feeding, exercise, socialisation, health monitoring, infection control
- Compliance — state animal welfare regulations (NSW Companion Animals Act, VIC Domestic Animals Act, etc.), local council pet boarding regulations
- Workforce management — kennel hands, animal care attendants, groomers, reception
- Financial management — annual budget ownership, occupancy / revenue, cost of feed / vet supplies
- Customer service — pet parent communication, special requirements, medical needs
- Facility maintenance — fencing, isolation rooms, exercise yards, climate control

Single-shift animal care work without P&L / staff hiring authority may be assessed at a lower skill level (typically 361199 Animal Attendant).
"Family business / owner-operator without governance"
VETASSESS scrutinises owner-operator cases. Provide business registration, audited financials, supplier statements, statutory declarations from non-related staff.
"Title without substance"
Generic descriptions of "running the kennel" without specific animal capacity, FTE, revenue, or financial figures get downgraded.
"Less than 20 hours per week effective"
Part-time or fractional roles may be discounted.
The five-year window
VETASSESS counts post-qualification employment at the required skill level within the last five years from the date of application.
