Bar admission pathway (3 stages)
Stage 1 — Academic equivalence
The Legal Practice Admission Board of your chosen state (LPAB NSW, VLAB Vic, LPAB Qld, etc.) assesses your overseas law qualification against Australian Priestley 11 areas of study:
- Criminal Law
- Torts
- Contracts
- Property
- Equity (including Trusts)
- Constitutional Law
- Administrative Law
- Civil Procedure
- Evidence
- Professional Conduct
- Company Law (Corporate Law)
Common-law jurisdictions (UK, NZ, Ireland, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa) typically only need 0-3 supplementary subjects. Civil law jurisdictions need substantially more bridging.
Standard turnaround for academic assessment: 6-12 weeks per state board.
Stage 2 — Practical Legal Training (PLT)
PLT is a competency-based program covering Australian legal practice essentials. Options:
- College of Law (national) — most common, online and on-campus options.
- Leo Cussen Centre for Law (Melbourne).
- ANU LLM (Legal Practice) — alternative for some applicants.
Typically 6-12 months part-time. Can be done overseas in some cases for College of Law program.
Stage 3 — Admission ceremony + Bar Reading
After academic equivalence + PLT, apply for admission to the state Supreme Court. Admission ceremony is held quarterly typically.
Then enter the Bar Reading Program — 12 months of structured pupillage:
- NSW Bar — Bar Practice Course + Reading with a tutor (senior barrister) for 12 months.
- Victorian Bar — Readers' Course + 9-month Reading Period.
- QLD Bar — similar Reading + 12 months.
Reading covers: ethics, advocacy, criminal practice, civil practice, evidence, statutory interpretation. Tutor / mentor barristers must agree to take you on — relationships matter.
After completing Reading and passing the Bar exams, the state Bar Association issues a Practising Certificate.
Documents required
For LPAB academic assessment:
- Certified copy of law degree (LLB / JD).
- Academic transcripts — full transcripts.
- Certificate of Good Standing from your home Bar Council / Law Society / Bar Association.
- Curriculum / syllabus for each Priestley 11-aligned subject — required for assessing equivalence.
- Practising experience evidence — admission certificate from home jurisdiction, post-qualification practice references.
- Identity — passport bio page.
- English — IELTS Academic / PTE Academic for visa, plus character / fitness checks.
For migration skills assessment
Some applicants use VETASSESS assessment of legal qualifications for the visa file (where applicable to specific specialty codes). For 271111 specifically, the conventional approach is:
- Build the visa file using either VETASSESS Solicitor (271311) assessment or Solicitor admission evidence as a stepping stone.
- Migrate to Australia.
- Complete Solicitor admission first (faster).
- Apply to Bar Reading after solicitor admission and meeting eligibility.
This dual-track approach is faster than waiting for Barrister-specific evidence.
English
ELTS Academic 7.0 each / PTE 65 each is the practical floor for legal practice. For 189 / 190 / 491, target Superior (8.0 each / 79 each).
Common pitfalls
- Civil law jurisdictions face longer Priestley 11 bridging. Candidates from German, Indonesian, Japanese, French, Vietnamese law backgrounds typically need 4-9 supplementary subjects.
- No reciprocal admission with most jurisdictions. UK / NZ admission does not auto-transfer — you still go through LPAB.
- Bar Reading is the gatekeeper. Securing a tutor / mentor who'll take you on is the practical bottleneck — network actively before / after arrival.
- Junior counsel income is variable. Newly-read barristers often have low first-year earnings — plan financial runway.
