ANZSCO 242211 covers teaching in vocational education and training (VET) — TAFE, Skills Australia institutes, and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). The trade variant teaches:
- Construction trades — carpentry, bricklaying, plumbing, painting, roofing
- Electrotechnology — electrical, electronics, refrigeration, instrumentation
- Automotive — light vehicle, heavy vehicle, diesel, body repair
- Engineering — fabrication, fitting, machining, welding, boilermaking
- Hospitality / cookery — chefs, patisserie, butchery, food trades
- Hair / beauty — hairdressing, beauty therapy, makeup
- Allied trades — horticulture, agriculture, landscaping
- Health support — aged care, disability, child care VET courses
University academics teaching at degree level → 242111 / 242112, not 242211. School teachers (years 7-12) → 241411 Secondary, not 242211.

VETASSESS — what evidence wins
VET Teacher (Trades) is Group A:
- AQF Bachelor or higher in education / training, OR
- AQF Diploma + significant trade qualification + extensive trade teaching experience
- Plus 1 year highly relevant post-qualification VET teaching at appropriate skill level
The ANZSCO 242211 unit allows trade-qualified candidates without a teaching degree if substantial VET teaching is demonstrated. UK / Irish / NZ / Canadian / South African college lecturers and trade trainers fit naturally.
Expected evidence:
- Trade qualifications (City & Guilds NVQ Level 3+, BTEC, recognised journeyman / apprenticeship completion)
- Teaching qualification (PGCE PCET, Cert Ed PCET, equivalent VET teaching credential)
- Employment letters from FE colleges / VET providers detailing teaching role, year level, hours, accreditation status
- Sample course outline / scheme of work / assessment materials you authored
TAE40122 — required for TAFE work
While VETASSESS does not require TAE40122 (Cert IV in Training and Assessment) pre-grant, every Australian RTO / TAFE will require it before classroom delivery. TAE40122 can be done online (~AUD 1,200-2,500) and takes 4-12 months part-time. Some employers fund it — confirm before signing.

Common mistakes
- Claiming Senior Lecturer rank. That's tertiary — university Lecturer is 242111. VET trade teaching is 242211.
- Submitting only trade qualification with no teaching evidence. VETASSESS needs evidence of teaching skill — sample lessons, course materials, letters confirming teaching duties.
- Confusing ANZSCO 242211 (Trades) with 242299 (NEC). General / non-trade VET is 242299 — narrower visa access.
- Assuming TAE40122 is irrelevant pre-arrival. It's not required for visa, but your first job offer often is conditional on it.
