This is a worked case study for a Cabler (Data and Telecommunications) migrating to Australia under ANZSCO 342411. Multiple pathways: Subclass 189, Subclass 190, Subclass 491 → 191, Subclass 186 Direct Entry, Subclass 494 → 191, and Subclass 482.
For visa-by-visa context, see the 342411 pathway guide and the TRA skills assessment guide.

The case profile
Anonymised composite. 30-year-old Senior Data Centre Cabling Technician, UK BTEC Level 3 Telecommunications + BICSI INST2 + DCDC + 8 years experience: 2 years apprentice with UK structured-cabling integrator (London commercial fitout), 3 years senior cabling tech at UK hyperscale build contractor (LD8 / LD9 / LD10 / LD11 Equinix London builds for Amazon Web Services / Microsoft Azure), 3 years lead fibre splicer at Asia-Pacific data centre integrator (Singapore SG1 / SG2 / SG3 / Manila / Kuala Lumpur deployments). Proficient English (UK native). Family: spouse, no children.
Strategic note: candidate is targeting Sydney for 482 sponsorship with AirTrunk SYD2 / SYD3 / SYD4 build, NEXTDC S3 / S4 build, or Equinix SY8 / SY9 expansion — all currently in active construction with continuous senior cabler / fibre-splicer recruitment.

Things that frequently surprise people
Hyperscale data centre cabling is its own industry. AWS Sydney Region 4 expansion, Microsoft Azure Australia East / Southeast build, Google Cloud Australia Southeast 1 / 2 — all currently in active construction. Sydney's western corridor (Eastern Creek, Macquarie Park, Mascot) plus Melbourne's western suburbs (Tullamarine, Derrimut, Truganina) host most builds.
MTP / MPO fibre is the premium skill. High-density 12-fibre / 24-fibre / 144-fibre MTP cassettes for 100G / 400G / 800G Ethernet require precision fibre splicing. Specialist fibre splicers earn AUD 95-130k base; senior leads on AUD 140-170k.
ACMA registration is fast to obtain. Most candidates obtain ACMA Open Cabling Registration within 2-4 weeks of arrival through BICSI, Master Cablers, TITAB, or another accredited registrar — verify qualification + identity + reference from a registered Australian cabler.
NBN remediation is winding down but FWA is growing. NBN's main FTTP rollout is mature; new growth is in Fibre Connect (FTTP overbuild), NBN HFC remediation, NBN 5G Fixed Wireless Access, and small-cell deployment.
5G small-cell DAS booming. Telstra / Optus / TPG-Vodafone 5G small-cell deployment in Sydney / Melbourne / Brisbane CBD + suburban centres + sport stadium DAS — Ericsson / Nokia / Huawei / Samsung deploy through cabling integrators.
Vertical / commercial fitout is steady. Sydney CBD / Parramatta / North Sydney / Macquarie Park, Melbourne CBD / Docklands / Cremorne, Brisbane CBD — continuous office fitout cabling work for the major Tier 1 builders (Multiplex, Lendlease, Built, Hutchinson, John Holland).
Underground cabling pays well. Pit-and-pipe install, micro-trenching, directional boring contractors (Bulla Boring, BMD, Service Stream Civils) pay strong rates for licensed underground operators.
Health examinations expire after 12 months. If your visa takes longer than 12 months to grant, expect to redo them.
Tax residency starts on arrival. The Australian tax year runs 1 July to 30 June. See ATO residency rules before signing.
MARA registration is mandatory for paid migration assistance. Verify any agent at the MARA register.
